What do parents really want in their lives and in their families?
After numerous talks with parents and teenagers, and being a parent myself, I noticed that what we really WANT, and NEED, is HARMONY.
Harmony is a synonym of PEACE and JOY.
How can parents bring joy and peace into their lives?
There are three elements which attract these qualities into our lives.
UNDERSTANDING
It is necessary to understand why teens behave as they behave, Parents are shocked and overwhelmed by teens’ attitude and actions, or… lack of actions. The matter of fact is that teens are overwhelmed and shocked too by the changes they are going through… Parents often blame themselves for being ‘bad and ineffective parents’. Good understanding of own patterns of thoughts and reactions can be very helpful in getting rid of own guilt!
CONNECTING
We all have ‘parental toolboxes’. The challenge is that some tools we do not use at all or misuse others. The nature of teenagers is becoming more independent. To help our children become independent and play safe, we may need to start using other communication tools.
It is also important to remember that we, adults, need to stay connected with ourselves to manage our own emotions.
CHANGE
Many parents tell me that other parents, teachers, educational psychologists or other professionals help them to UNDERSTAND and even they suggest what tools might be used to improve CONNECTION with teens.
However… parents are not being empowered enough how to maintain SUSTAINABLE CHANGES in their lives.
